Girl Scouts creates iGive Cookie gift of caring program
to share cookies with military, food banks
According to Alisha Moore, Girl Scouts Louisiana East Vice President of Sales, the council selected three non-profit organizations to receive Girl Scout Cookies this year: Blue Star Mothers, which sends care packages to military serving overseas, and two local food banks, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank.
“We wanted to give others a taste of home they might not otherwise enjoy, whether it’s because they’re stationed in the Middle East, or cannot afford to purchase them,” said Moore.
Customers may purchase cookies online for these three organizations by clicking on the iGive icon on the council’s website at www.gsle.org. The cookies are delivered by council representatives to the charity of choice. Cookies are $4 a box or $48 for a case of 12.
Moore said the iGive program is modeled after the council’s popular Gift of Caring program, which is when a Girl Scout troop selects a charity for customers to donate cookies to, but delivers the cookies themselves. In 2013, nearly 19,000 boxes of cookies were donated to over 250 local community organizations and non-profits. She expects that this year’s program was just as popular.
“Girl Scout troops think highly of the service and sacrifice provided by our military as well as our local police and fire personnel. In fact, one of our Girl Scout troops is shipping 18 cases (216 cookies) to the military this year,” she said.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is an annual financial literacy and entrepreneurial program in which troops earn money towards fun and exciting girl-planned program activities and service projects, as well as contribute to the council’s ability to provide Girl Scouting across southeast Louisiana.
Moore said the council has a surplus of cookies, so if any businesses or individuals are still looking for Girl Scout cookies, they are not out of luck yet. Contact Moore at 800-644-7571, ext. 2241 or email@example.com.
