Troop Camping Training

 

Troop Camping I

This training consists of two sessions that must be completed in order to be qualified to take a troop on a camping trip for up to two nights at Camp Covington, Camp Marydale or Camp Whispering Pines. Troop Camping I sessions are grouped together to facilitate an efficient training experience, and the two sessions must be taken together in the correct order.

Troop Camping I - A (in the classroom) covers general camp preparation such as procedures, how to pack, what not to bring, etc. The training also covers meal planning and participants are assigned food/equipment to bring to the overnight portion of the training.

Troop Camping I - B (overnight at a Council Campsite) teaches a variety of outdoor skills including safety, fire building, a variety of outdoor cooking methods, knife skills, etc. Training Cards will be signed upon completion of the course.

Trainers have the right to refuse to sign a participants training card if the participant does not follow the safety guidelines or has not retained the information.

Additional training is needed for extended trips or trips beyond the council’s properties.

Required for: All registered adults who will be assisting the girls as they plan and carry out a camping trip at one of the council's properties.

Prerequisites: GSUSA Online orientation

Bring to Session A (classroom): Outdoor Education in Girl Scouting book, Safety-Wise, Volunteer Essentials, and Troop Module. Our Council produced cookbook, Pocket Stew, is recommended but not required.

Bring to Session B (at camp): Training card, mess kit with utensils, appropriate clothese for the weather, comfortable shoes, toiletries, and other items discussed in the Session A training.

**This summer training will not include an 'In classroom' session. All pre-work will be emailed when you register for the class. ALSO, please remit a $5 fee (for meals prepared during this training day) to your trainer/facilitator when you check in at Camp Covington.
