St. Bernard Community Foundation helps to fund Girl Scout Day Camp

September 2010

Girl Scouts in St. Bernard Parish received some much needed fun and friendship this summer when they attended the annual Down in da Parish Girl Scout day camp in July, thanks to a generous contribution from the St. Bernard Community Foundation and an anonymous donor. The week-long day camp which is run entirely by volunteers was in jeopardy of being cancelled because of low registration numbers due to the economic effect of the gulf oil spill on local families.

“We are so thankful for the financial support of the St. Bernard Community Foundation and other donors who helped to provide some summer fun and make a difference in the lives of St. Bernard Girl Scouts,” said Marianne Addy, vice president of communications and fund development for the local council, Girl Scouts Louisiana East.

Adult volunteer and day camp director, Tanya Palazzalo said, “With the additional stress that many of our families are going through, it was wonderful to see so many of our Girl Scouts having fun and reconnecting with friends at camp this summer.” This year’s day camp was held at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Chalmette.

Each year, Girl Scout adult volunteers plan and facilitate Girl Scout day camps in many parishes throughout southeast Louisiana. The St. Bernard Girl Scout day camp has been an annual event since 2004 with Girl Scouts coming from all over the parish to attend.

Girl Scout’s mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts Louisiana East serves girls 5 to 17 in the parishes of Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana.  For more information about Girl Scouts or adult volunteer opportunities in St. Bernard Parish, call Tanya Palazzalo at 504-343-2934, membership executive Lerin Amos in the council office in New Orleans at 504-733-8220, or visit its website at www.gsle.org.
