Join the Girl Scout Advocacy Network

At the 2008 National Council Session, Girl Scouts launched its first ever Girl Scouts grassroots network (www.girlscouts4girls.org). Over 1,000 Girl Scout members, volunteers, staff and alumnae joined the Girl Scouts Advocacy Network to act on issues moving through Congress and the state legislatures that are important to girls and Girl Scouts. This was a great start, but we need ALL Girl Scout staff, friends and supporters to become a part of this important effort.

By joining the Girl Scout Advocacy Network, you become part of a collective voice in the Girl Scout movement that responds to policy issues that impact girls and Girl Scouts.  As a member, you will:

•     Receive updates on issues moving through Congress and the state legislatures;
•     Be able to send customized messages to your elected officials;
•     Have access to contact information for your elected officials; and
•     Be a part of a growing grassroots network.

Log on to www.girlscouts4girls.org and become a member today!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Day is on January 19, 2009. In the United States, Martin Luther King Day is always observed on the third Monday of January and Girl Scouts of the USA are looking for some extraordinary tales of community service and leadership. Send any stories you think are appropriate to Marianne Addy at maddy@gsle.org by January 5 and she will forward them to GSUSA.

Thank you!

Camp Marydale Clean up

A big thank you to all of the girls and adults from the Wrangler troop and Baton Rouge Service Unit 604 that came out to Camp Marydale on Saturday, October 18 to help with the clean up of debris left after the two hurricanes. With their help we were able to get both Lakeview's, Owls Roost, and Tanglewood cleaned up!

Fall Festival activities

A very special "thank you" goes out to the following troops for their help at the Fall Festival at CWP: Slidell Troop 63, Chalmette Troop 519, Metairie Troops 957, 826 and 143, New Orleans Troop 102, Des Allemands Troop 851, and Pearl River Troop 415.

The council’s program department can always use more volunteer assistance! We are looking for Cadette - Ambassador troops that would like to lead program for the younger girls at events or would like to volunteer at the council at some other capacity. Adult volunteers are also encouraged and needed to help administer events such as registration assistance, volunteer as a first aider, even present programs. Contact the program department for further details or fill out and submit the information form here.

Speaking of Fall Festival, congratulations to all who participated in our community service project with the Pajama Program. "I counted 50 pajama sets and 135 books which is really great. The pajamas were particularly needed because we were out of winter pajamas which all the Girl Scouts gave us. Thanks!"  said Ann Giambelluca, program coordinator and volunteer for the Louisiana chapter of Pajama Program.
