Journey Begins event cancelled

The launch event of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience originally scheduled for Saturday, August 9 has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Fall Product Sale Training & Rally Information

The Fall Product Service Unit Training (for Service Unit Product Sales Managers and Service Unit Managers council-wide) is Saturday, August 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at LaPlace Elementary and Middle School, 393 Greenwood Drive, LaPlace. Please register online by 11 a.m. August 15.

A Fall Product Kickoff Rally has been set for Saturday, September 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Global Wildlife Center, 26389 Highway 40, Folsom. Cost is $13 per person and includes entrance fee, tour, fee for animals during tour, and Global Wildlife patch for girls. Troops, please bring a sack lunch. Capacity is 1,000 participants, and Safety-Wise rules and adult to girl ratios apply.

Times will be assigned to each group for the guided tour. Each tour can accommodate 130 people. There will be music, booths, and spacewalks; perhaps other activities as plans are finalized.

The registration deadline is 5:30 p.m., August 20. Please register by completing the event registration form.

The actual fall product sale is September 13-October 5. The family and friends sale differs from the cookie sale in that all orders are pre-paid and there are no booth sales. The troop earns $1 for every item sold and $2 for every address booklet (only one per girl) completed. Girls deliver the orders in November, and since the money is pre-collected, the troop receives their proceeds immediately.

Girls must be registered by September 1 for the new membership year in order to participate in the sale. The sale is for all age levels including Girl Scout Daisies- an arrangement that is new this year. As always, participation in the fall product sale is entirely voluntary.

Spur / New Wrangler (Training) Weekend

Do you know any Girl Scouts ages 11-13 and 14 years old and up who want to join Girl Scout Louisiana East's Wrangler program? Do they have some experience with horseback riding and are interested in learning about the care of horses and how to teach horseback riding?

Girls who attend this training weekend, August 22-24, will be expected to volunteer for a number of weekends this fall to assist riding staff with the horse program. Girls (11-13) can join as a Spur and girls (14 and up) can join as a Wrangler. This weekend is for all new and returning Spurs and new Wranglers. Each girl will increase her riding skills, learn how to properly care for the horses, such as grooming, feeding, cleaning stalls, how to saddle, and many more fun things.

Check in at Camp Marydale is Friday at 6 p.m. and check out is Sunday at 12 p.m. Event code is SPNW08. Cost is $20 per girl (to cover cost of food and cooks). Class capacity is minimum 10, maximum 28 and registration is open now until maximum is reached. Contact Donna Dupre at ddupre@gsle.org or (225) 927-8946. Adults limited to Safety-Wise ratios, but encouraged to attend. Wrangler/Spur adults are required for all work weekends during the year.

Save the Date for August 23 for Cheetah Girls One World movie release

Excited girls from Girl Scouts Louisiana East are making the popcorn for the big day – August 23- when they will celebrate The Cheetah Girls One World movie as part of a new collaboration between Girl Scouts of the USA and Disney Channel. The Indian-themed Girl Scout event is designed to help girls appreciate global diversity and allow them to experience the movie in a fun yet educational way.

This screening is the result of an exclusive new partnership with Disney Channel’s summer movie, The Cheetah Girls One World, starring former Girl Scouts Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan, and Kiely Williams, and was recently filmed in India.

Locations are being sought for screening parties to be hosted throughout the council. We are also looking for adult volunteers that can help make this event a success. If you would like to volunteer for this event please contact Kevin Shipp at (504) 733-8220 or email at kshipp@gsle.org. Stay tuned to www.gsle.org or the council email newsletter for updates.

Show Must Go on for Juniors

Young actors don’t have to be drawn to the limelight to earn their Create and Invent Theater Badges. This September 13 workshop, taught by Drama Kids International, is for everyone, from the naturally outgoing to the relatively shy child. Fun theatre games focus on skills that encourage kids to speak clearly and act confidently while exploring aspects of theatre and theatre production.  Juniors will mirror mimics, character charades, vocal manipulations, and articulation exercises.

Additionally, Drama Kids teachers will explore the importance of theatre props and the history of masks, and the girls will create props and masks while conceptualizing a character that might use them.

The first event (Event Code: SGJR01) is Saturday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Program Center, GSLE Regional Service Center, 545 Colonial Drive, Baton Rouge, LA70806. (also being offered 10/11, 2/28, 4/11)

Cost is $12 per person. Safety-Wise adult/girl ratio required. Maximum 25 girl capacity. Register by September 5. Contact Donna Dupre at ddupre@gsle.org or (225) 927-8946 for more information.
