Elmer's Island Beach Sweep--September 11, 2021
Girl Scouts, we've been inside for too long! It's time to get out and make the world a better place. Join with BTNEP (Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program) and Fletcher Technical College instructors for a day of conservation on our coast! We will start with some educational presentations about debris and wildlife conservation. When we arrive, buckets and gloves will be provided (feel free to bring your own) and begin a rigorous clean up of our shore and nurdle patrol! Do you know what nurdles are? For girls ages 11 and up. Bring your water bottle as well as sun block and bug repellant, any needed snacks, a change of shoes and a towel, the probability of getting wet and muddy is high. Lunch will be provided.
All participants will meet at Fletcher Technical Community College located at 1407 Highway 311, Schriever LA 70395. Plan to arrive by 7:45am, the bus will depart at 8am. BTNEP will provide lunch (subway ham/cheese, chips, cookie). The bus will have a bathroom on it as there are no bathrooms on Elmer's Island.
Education on the bus will be on Marine Debris. Also touching on birds, fish, plants, shells, and other things they will see at the beach. There are a few activities on the bus as well.
Arrival at Elmer's 9:30 am: Girl Scouts will participate in the Nurdle Patrol and collect nurdles as well. Girls can bring a container for "treasures" that they find and want to keep (nothing alive! LOL). Cleanup will be for about 45 minutes.
11:00 am - 11:30 am: Once back on the bus, we will travel to Port Fourchon for lunch. The commissioner's building has bathrooms and tables and chairs to set up for lunch. Recap and talk of what was found, where it came from, prevention, etc...
12:45 pm: The bus ride home will be a video (Plastic Ocean) and probably some Zzzzzzz!
2:30pm: arrive back at Fletcher.
