Equestrain-Horse-Gallery

Equestrian Center & Horse Gallery

Camp Marydale has an outstanding equestrian program that is enjoyed by Girl Scouts year round, with approximately 25 horses in our stables. It costs $1,500 a year to care for just one of our horses, so any financial support we receive, earmarked for our equestrian program, helps to offset these expenses.

We are partnered with Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine who provide specialized care, such as vaccinations and teeth floating, to each horse. Doctoral students have also completed studies on the herd. All of our horses are adopted with many of them coming to us with health, weight, and age complications. Our staff work daily to make sure our horses are properly treated, fed and comfortable in our up-to-code barns.

Our Wrangler program teaches girls, ages 14 and up, leadership skills in addition to horse knowledge as they pair with adult mentors to teach Western horseback riding workshops at troops and service units. Wranglers also help out with special weekend events such as Love Hug & Groom, and Hoof Pick Horse Camp. Spurs are girls, ages 12 and up, who shadow the Wranglers and help, as well.

Concho was especially good at side passing and half passing. That means going side to side without moving forward and trotting sideways. Concho can still do all of those things, but now he would rather be a perfect angel for his riders in a class.

Gent is short for gentleman because he carries himself much differently than the other horses. Gent was brought to the United States from Saudi Arabia to be a jumper, but never could manage to do better than walk/trot crossrail classes. Since he would rather just walk and trot, he was a perfect fit instantly!

Rustie and Ruby both spent some time at that ranch, and you can tell in the way they are trained. They are best friends and do not like to go anywhere without each other. They even mirror each other in the pasture the way they eat and play!
