Camp Marydale has an outstanding equestrian program that is enjoyed
by Girl Scouts year round, with approximately 25 horses in our
stables. It costs $1,500 a year to care for just one of our horses, so
any financial support we receive, earmarked for our equestrian
program, helps to offset these expenses.
We are partnered with Louisiana State University's School of
Veterinary Medicine who provide specialized care, such as vaccinations
and teeth floating, to each horse. Doctoral students have also
completed studies on the herd. All of our horses are adopted with many
of them coming to us with health, weight, and age complications. Our
staff work daily to make sure our horses are properly treated, fed and
comfortable in our up-to-code barns.
Our Wrangler program teaches girls, ages 14 and up, leadership
skills in addition to horse knowledge as they pair with adult mentors
to teach Western horseback riding workshops at troops and service
units. Wranglers also help out with special weekend events such as
Love Hug & Groom, and Hoof Pick Horse Camp. Spurs are girls, ages
12 and up, who shadow the Wranglers and help, as well.
